Start with capability. Connect the evidence.

Learning technology often begins with the tool. Reasonline begins somewhere else: What should the student become capable of doing? From there, learning experiences, evidence, assessment, and next actions connect around the same capability.

The Reason Line shows the model at a glance. The steps below show what each part looks like in practice.

Capability

Evaluate a pricing decision using customer, competitor, and financial evidence.

1 of 6

1. Define what matters.

What should the student be able to explain, apply, evaluate, judge, create, communicate, or do? Not simply Pricing, but Evaluate a pricing decision using customer, competitor, and financial evidence. The capability becomes the anchor for everything that follows.

2. Design the learning.

Reasonline Learn helps instructors create purposeful experiences around that capability — practice, apply, simulate, critique, discuss, or respond to adaptive challenge. Interaction depth should follow the learning objective, not the novelty of the AI.

3. Capture meaningful evidence — and preserve its context.

As students work, Reasonline captures evidence connected to the capability, and preserves the conditions it was produced under (AI support, feedback, prior attempts) rather than treating every performance as identical.

4. Add another assessment signal when it matters.

Sometimes the learning evidence is enough. Sometimes Reasonline Assess creates another instructor-configured condition, grounded in the task, to add a useful additional signal.

5. Connect the evidence.

Learning evidence and assessment evidence connect to the same capability without being treated as interchangeable — even if the evidence conflicts, or there isn't enough of it yet.

6. Ask what might be useful next — and let a person decide.

Learning Intelligence can surface explainable recommendations and patterns. The student may practice again, the instructor may intervene, or the right decision may be to do nothing — Reasonline does not turn every signal into an automated academic decision.

Not every course needs every part.

An instructor may begin with one assessment. A program may pilot Reasonline around one set of signature assignments. The architecture is connected, but adoption does not have to happen all at once.

Keep the LMS.

Reasonline focuses on a layer traditional learning systems were not designed to handle: what students are developing, demonstrating, and might need next. The LMS keeps managing the course around it.

Start with one capability, one learning experience, or one assessment.
